Residents of Boulder should keep their eyes peeled for a new restaurant, Ella, opening early this summer. The establishment is the latest project of esteemed restaurateur Edwin Zoe. Ella will be located at 1265 Alpine Avenue on Boulder’s north end. If that location sounds familiar to you, there’s a reason. The building that will house Ella was most recently home to the freshly closed Radda Trattoria. Trattoria, an Italian restaurant which Zoe of which became a controlling partner two years ago, closed at the end of May to allow for renovations and redecorating to begin.
Zoe has plans for Ella to be something of an upscale American restaurant, centering its focus on traditional diner food. It is hoped that the pairing of slightly upscale takes on classic American dishes paired with a relaxed atmosphere will make for an environment in which people enjoy spending their time.
“I want people to come to Ella for their favorite classics without feeling rushed or disappointed. This will be elevated diner fare, and the fine-casual setting will encourage people to linger and enjoy themselves,” Zoe announced.
Zoe is perhaps best known for his work at Zoe Ma Ma, a restaurant he co-owns with his mother (hence the name). The restaurant, located on Tenth Street, focuses on recreating his mother’s cooking style and signature dishes and has been a hit among Boulder foodies.
While the closing of Radda Trattoria has saddened some, Zoe seems optimistic about his re-purposing of the space. He explained in an interview with The Denver Post that he feels Ella will fill a valuable space in the Boulder restaurant market.
“Radda was a wonderful restaurant, but I felt the great space – and the neighborhood – would be better served with a different concept. I have long hoped for a fine diner in Boulder, and now we are going to build just that.” Ella is expected to open its doors before the end of June.
