Soon there will be a mixed used retail establishment in the Austin area, featuring a boutique, cafe, wine bar and more. According to Culture Map Austin, husband and wife duo Greg Mathews and Jade Place-Mathews will be opening up Friends and Neighbors on Cesar Chavez Street in the East Austin area.
Along with their business partner Jill Bradshaw, they have been creating this retail destination for the last eight months. The establishment will sell home goods, textiles, clothing and a rotating seasonal display. For the cafe portion, the owners will source wine, beer and coffee from Portland-brand Stumptown Coffee Roasters.
The Mathewses like to create spaces they would like to visit, as well as spots that will serve the Austin community.
“When we built Hillside [Farmacy], we wanted somewhere to have coffee in the morning and oysters at night,” Mathews told the source. “But it’s grown into its own thing. [At Friends & Neighbors] we just wanted to scale back, start smaller.”
At the Hillside eatery and grocery store, the owners serve up breakfast treats like croissant sandwiches, eggs and toast, and yogurt parfaits. There is also a range of sandwiches featuring roasted chicken, meatloaf, pork belly and aged meats. The eatery gets the Farmacy name from its farm-fresh offerings, including artisanal cheese and charcuterie plates, kale salad and seasonal coleslaw.
