Aged cheeseAs the saying goes, everything truly is bigger in the Lone Star State. In keeping with this idea, it’s no surprise that the Texas culinary arts scene boasts an incredible range of treasures. Much to the delight of local chefs, students, residents and foodies with a passion for dairy, the state has no shortage of locations at which to procure some of the best cheese in the country. Still, with such an overwhelming amount of resources and selection at the disposal of the average consumer, it can be hard to know where to start. Whether you’re hosting a wine and cheese tasting party, looking to find a new favorite dairy store or simply hoping to stock your fridge with new, rich tastes, take a look at some of the best cheese stores in Texas.

Scardello
Residents of the Dallas-Ft. Worth area who haven’t yet ventured out to Scardello are missing out. The cheese shop, which is located at 3511 Oak Lawn Ave, is one of the premier destinations for all things cheesy in Dallas. CBS has honored it as one of the best cheese stores in the DFW metropolitan area, and this accolade comes with ample reason. The shop boasts an incredible selection of cheeses from America and Europe, totaling more than 150 different varieties on any given day. They also rotate in different options to account for seasonal tastes, so on any given trip to the store you may find something that surprises you. You can also just drop by and have lunch at the in-house deli.

Antonelli’s
Austin has become known for its incredibly diverse culinary scene and emphasis on sourcing locally, and Antonelli’s is at the front of that effort when it comes to cheese. The store specializes in selling cheeses produced in the Lone Star State, meaning that you’ll be able to get the added benefit of buying local when you shop there. According to its website, Antonelli’s sources its products from nearly 20 different Texas farms including Lucky Layla in Plano, Brazos Valley Cheese in Waco, Wateroak Farm in Bryan, CKC Farms in Blanco and Eagle Mountain Farmhouse Cheese in Granbury. Antonelli’s is located at 4220 Duval Street, and the shop advises calling ahead to check availability if you’re shopping for a specific variety of cheese.

Marfa Maid
Named for its hometown, Marfa Maid is one of the lesser known treasures of the Texas cheese scene. According to Texas Highways, the farm and cheese?-making operation sits on fifteen acres in Marfa owned by proprietors Allan McClane and Melinda Beeman. The operation specializes in making artisanal cheeses modeled after culinary cultures from all over the world, so every visit can be a different experience than the last. Even better, Marfa Maid offers cheese?-making classes to small groups if you call ahead and reserve a time slot, which makes it a perfect outing for family or friends looking for a delicious weekend activity.
