The men and women of the armed forces risk their lives and sacrifice a great deal to serve their country. For Austin culinary arts students, one of the best ways to show your appreciation is through tasty food. If you want to honor your favorite vet’s service with a special meal, try these recipes that are delicious as they are all-American.

1. Perfect your deviled eggs

Deviled eggs are a classic choice for celebratory picnics and cookouts. Prepare this beloved appetizer using a traditional recipe like the one provided by The Kitchn. Get started by hard-boiling a batch of eggs.

Once the eggs are cooked, crack them and place in cold water for a minute before peeling. Cut each egg in half, carefully removing the yolks and setting them aside in a bowl. Place the whites on a platter.

Crumble the yolks with a fork before mashing in mayonnaise and yellow mustard. When the mixture is smooth, add salt and pepper. Place the filling back in the eggs using a spoon or a piping bag and sprinkle on paprika and parsley to serve.

2. Grill some burgers

Nothing says “America” quite like a grill covered with freshly cooked hamburgers. Step up your game by following the directions from Melissa d’Arabian. This take calls for preparing a glaze by combining Dijon mustard, soy sauce and sugar.

Use 85 percent-lean ground beef to form the burgers, seasoning with salt and pepper. Place on a grill at medium-high heat, cooking four or five minutes on either side. Brush on the glaze halfway through the process, and add Swiss cheese a minute before taking the burgers off the grill.

While preparing the meat, warm olive oil in a skillet on medium-high heat. Saute chopped mushrooms for five minutes before adding garlic and thyme. Cook another three minutes and season with salt and pepper. Assemble the burgers on toasted buns, topping with the mushrooms.

3. Craft an old-fashioned apple pie

Apple pie is the ultimate patriotic dessert, not to mention comforting and delicious. One version offered by Epicurious is built on a thin butter crust. After preparing the dough using pastry flour, salt, butter and water, split in half and roll out to a quarter-inch thickness. Use one half to line a pie pan, and keep all the dough chilled until ready for use.

Peel apples and slice into quarter-inch pieces, placing them in a bowl. Toss with granulated sugar, cinnamon and flour. Add dots of butter before setting the top crust in place, sealing with a bit of water and crimping the edges.

Cut vents into the top crust before placing in an oven set to 375 degrees. Bake for about an hour, or until the crust turns a golden brown.

Whether it’s a holiday or just a warm summer weekend, it’s a great time to celebrate those who have served our nation. Preparing a few all-American dishes is the perfect way to gather people together, and students working toward a culinary arts certificate online can find tasty ways to make these classics their own.
