A Sample of Externship Opportunities
All programs include a hands-on industry externship that takes you beyond the classroom. Career Services can help you identify goals, prepare materials, and find an externship.
The externship sites listed have been used by our students between 2024 and 2025 for both Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts (AESCA) Austin and Boulder (Residential and Distance Education programs) campuses and are provided for informational purposes only. Inclusion on this list does not constitute an endorsement or guarantee by AESCA of the site, its quality, or the experience offered. The availability of externship opportunities at these sites may vary and is subject to the discretion of each site.
AESCA does not guarantee Student employment or starting income. The School offers externship search assistance to the Student, but does not guarantee the Student employment or salary now or at any time in the future. The externship does not constitute a permanent employment relationship, and the externship site is not obligated to hire the Student upon completion of the externship. Decisions made by the externship site are of an independent third-party entity hosting the student and, therefore, not under the control of AESCA.

What types of jobs are available in the culinary industry?
The culinary industry includes far more than professional kitchens! A wide variety of careers can be found across seven broad segments: lodging, restaurants, catering, institutional dining, retail food, leisure and recreation, and food manufacturing.
While preparing food may be at the heart of the culinary industry, this sector also includes roles like food writing, food styling, recipe development, food photography, nutrition coaching, restaurant and hospitality management, and chef consulting.
How can Career Services help me get a job?
Career Services at Escoffier can support your job search in several ways. The team may help you build and refine your resume at each stage of your career, prepare a professional portfolio of your culinary work, and practice for interviews through mock sessions and personalized feedback. They can also connect you with employers through Escoffier’s network of national and international industry partners.
While outcomes depend on individual effort and local market conditions, these tools can help you uncover opportunities and present yourself as a prepared, credible candidate.
How can Career Services help support alumni?
Career support from Escoffier remains available after graduation. Alumni may continue to access resume assistance, interview coaching, and job referrals as their careers develop. If you’re pursuing a promotion, considering a pivot, or thinking about entrepreneurship, the team can offer guidance on next steps.
Through the EConnect jobs platform, you can search and connect with prospective employers, while the Escoffier Alumni Association can further support graduates through mentorship connections, continuing education, and a professional community of thousands of fellow graduates around the world.
What types of culinary and hospitality jobs are available after graduation?
Graduates may pursue a wide range of roles across kitchen and hospitality businesses.
On the culinary side, common paths can include prep cook, line cook, chef de partie, sous chef, pastry chef, or private chef. Hospitality-focused graduates may find opportunities as restaurant managers, hotel food and beverage managers, banquet managers, or event planners. Some graduates have even gone on to open their own restaurants, food trucks, or catering businesses.
While there are many potential options, your specific path can depend on your program, skills, and professional interests.
How can Career Services help me grow my culinary career if I live in a rural area?
Distance doesn’t have to limit your career development. Career Services support at Escoffier is available to all students and alumni regardless of location, which can be valuable if you’re not near a major restaurant market.
The team can help you refine your resume and prepare for interviews remotely, and may connect you with job leads through EConnect, a platform that links culinary professionals with career-minded employers.
Escoffier’s networking resources, alumni connections, and employer partnerships can all be accessed without needing to be in a large metro area.
What does career progression look like in the culinary industry?
Many culinary careers start at entry-level positions—such as prep cook, line cook, or catering assistant—where it can be possible to develop foundational skills and learn the pace and culture of a professional culinary business.
From there, advancement often comes through gaining skills in your current role, cross-training on multiple stations, and taking on additional responsibilities over time. Moving into roles like chef de partie, sous chef, or eventually executive chef can take years of consistent effort.
Some professionals ultimately branch into food entrepreneurship, consulting, education, or other food-adjacent careers. Progression is rarely linear, but attitude, work ethic, and a willingness to keep learning can all be consistent factors in long-term growth.
