Frequently Asked Questions for New Students & Admissions
How can I start culinary school at Escoffier?
Getting started at Escoffier can be a straightforward experience. First, fill out an online inquiry form with your basic information and program of interest—there’s no cost or obligation. An Admissions representative will reach out to schedule a phone conversation where you can discuss your career goals, ask questions, and explore which program might fit your life.
When you’re ready to move forward, you’ll complete the online application. There’s no application fee, and you’ll typically hear back promptly. At this point, your Admissions representative can help guide you on all required paperwork you must submit, including your proof of high school completion (or equivalent), to help you start your program on schedule.
During this time, you can also work with Financial Aid to explore financing options like loans, grants, and scholarships.
Once accepted, you’ll complete an orientation before your first day of class, at which point your culinary education will officially be underway!
Do I need cooking experience before starting culinary school?
Culinary experience is not required to enroll at Escoffier. Students come from all backgrounds—straight from high school, career changers, or anywhere in between. What matters most is your passion for food and commitment to learning.
While formal experience isn’t necessary, basic familiarity with cooking can help you feel confident as you begin. If you’ve cooked for family or experimented with recipes, you may already have a helpful foundation. Escoffier’s culinary curricula start with fundamentals, so everyone can begin at the appropriate level.
If you’d like to build confidence before starting, consider practicing basic knife skills, following recipes precisely, visiting local restaurants to observe kitchen operations, or reading about food safety basics.
What equipment or supplies do I need for culinary school?
When you begin your program, you’ll receive a standard toolkit that includes knives, a digital scale, and other culinary tools tailored to your specific program. You may also receive an official chef’s uniform with the Escoffier logo. These tools can give you many of the essentials to begin your professional culinary education!
Online students will be responsible for purchasing ingredients throughout their program, and may need to supplement their kit with additional kitchen items as needed for assignments.
Online students will also need a computer with reliable internet access and a smartphone or camera for documenting food preparation. If you don’t have a computer that meets requirements, you can purchase a laptop through Escoffier for an additional fee.
Can I work while attending culinary school?
Yes! Escoffier’s online programs can be a good fit for working adults who need flexibility. With asynchronous learning, you can complete coursework during the week as it fits your schedule—early mornings, late nights, or weekends. Video demos and course materials are available 24/7, so you’re not locked into a specific class time.
Assignments are released every Wednesday and due the following Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. CT, giving you a predictable structure to plan around work and family responsibilities. After watching Chef Instructor demo videos, you complete assignments in your own kitchen and submit photos for feedback.
Online students also complete a hands-on industry externship in a professional kitchen or food business. You choose where to extern, so it can work with your location and schedule.
How long does it take to start culinary school after I apply?
After you’re accepted, only a few steps remain before your first day.
Before classes begin, you’ll participate in orientation—your onboarding to the learning platform, academic expectations, and available support resources. Orientation timing is typically close to your start date, and your Admissions representative will provide specific details.
You may also receive your culinary toolkit and uniform around this time. The exact timeline from application to start date varies based on program availability and when you complete your requirements, but your Admissions representative can give you a realistic timeline based on your specific situation and the next available start date.
What are the technology requirements for online culinary programs?
Escoffier’s online culinary programs require a desktop or laptop computer, broadband high-speed internet, and access to a smartphone, tablet, or camera to photograph your culinary work. We also recommend using the Google Chrome browser for the best experience.
If you don’t already have a computer, you can have a Chromebook mailed to you for an additional $250 Technology Fee.
Escoffier’s online culinary programs are designed to be accessible regardless of technical expertise. If you encounter any questions or issues, technical support is available by calling (877) 224-8576 or emailing [email protected].
Can I transfer credits from another college to Escoffier?
Yes, Escoffier accepts transfer credits from accredited institutions. Both our Austin and Boulder campuses (including online programs) allow students to submit official college transcripts for review.
To qualify, your previous coursework must meet specific criteria: equivalent or more credit hours than Escoffier’s courses, content covering the same competencies, a grade of C or better, and completion within a recent timeframe. Transfer credit acceptance is at the school’s discretion and depends on how well your prior coursework aligns with Escoffier’s curriculum.
Approved transfer credits appear on your transcript and reduce your program length and tuition accordingly. Contact Escoffier Admissions for personalized guidance on your specific situation.
What should I do to prepare before my first day of culinary school?
Perhaps the most important thing to address before your first day of culinary school is to work with your Admissions representative to ensure that all necessary paperwork is submitted on time, so that you can begin your program as scheduled.
Also, it’s a good idea to get your support system ready before starting your program. Talk with family, friends, and your employer about your program schedule so they can help support you. Think through your time commitments and plan how you’ll balance school with other responsibilities. Our personal goal-setting app can help you identify potential roadblocks and explore solutions that could help you achieve your goals; we highly recommend you check it out before your first day!
Finally, get excited! Culinary school is a big investment in yourself and your future. Approach it with enthusiasm, dedication, and a genuine desire to learn—these qualities matter more than prior experience.
