If there’s one thing that Colorado’s known for, it’s its craft beer scene. From New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins to Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver, there’s no shortage of places to sip a local brew in the Centennial State – and Colorado culinary school students know Boulder is no exception. As you complete your coursework and concoct some delicious dishes, try pairing them with these beers that call Boulder home:

Brewery: Boulder Beer
Beer: Shake Chocolate Porter
Food: Chocolate pudding
Why it works: What goes better with chocolate than more chocolate? Boulder Beer’s flavorful version of the porter evokes tastes of chocolate (of course), caramel and coffee. Drink it alongside a traditional chocolate pudding, or bring this pairing to the next level by adding notes of salted caramel to your confection. Double the flavors, double the fun.

Brewery: Avery Brewing Company
Beer: Joe’s Premium American Pilsner
Food: Sushi
Why it works: Bet you didn’t see that one coming, huh? After all, why not pair an American beer with an American food? We’ll tell you: The hoppiness of this brew makes it the ideal partner for the savory tastes of raw fish. Plus, it brings out the striking flavors of soy sauce and wasabi.

Brewery: Twisted Pine Brewing Co.
Beer: La Petite Saison
Food: Roasted chicken
Why it works: This saison has essences of orange blossom, lemon peel and peppercorn, which makes it ideal to drink with roasted chicken. That’s because saison is a type of farmhouse ale, so it complements the simple and familiar flavors of this dish. Season your chicken with thyme, lemon and a bit of garlic, and you’ll have yourself a match made in hop?s heaven.

Brewery: Upslope Brewing Company
Beer: India Pale Ale
Food: Pizza
Why it works: Because Upslope says so. Seriously, the brewer recommends that you enjoy this bold and and bitter ale with a slice of your favorite ‘za. Also, the taste of an IPA is strong enough to compete with whatever flavors you throw its way – whether you prefer your pizza to be piled with pepperoni or veggies.

Brewery: Sanitas Brewing Company
Beer: Special Cargo
Food: Salad
Why it works: This brew is light-bodied and has an unmistakably tart and fruity flavor, making it the perfect beverage to drink with a crisp salad. Top your greens with grilled beef and a homemade vinaigrette dressing to balance the sourness of Special Cargo.
