Austin’s prime frozen dessert establishment celebrated its fourth anniversary Tuesday, Oct. 20. Lick Honest Ice Creams gave away free scoops to everyone who stops by after 7 p.m.. At 2032 S. Lamar Blvd., it’s less than a half hour from our Austin culinary arts school, so why wouldn’t you check it out?

Lick Honest Ice Creams opened in 2011 and has since expanded to a second Austin location, with another in San Antonio. Co-owners Anthony Sobotik and Chad Palmatier always had an appreciation for homemade ice cream and in the years leading up to the launch of Lick Honest Ice Creams, they came up with creative flavor ideas and brainstormed about the best ways to deliver “honest” ice creams to the city of Austin.

The local emphasis
Artificial colors and flavors, high fructose corn syrup and preservatives have no place in Lick Honest Ice Creams’ treats. They try to use as many organic ingredients as possible and operate with an emphasis on locavorism. All of Lick Honest Ice Creams’ nonvegan ice creams are made of 100 percent real milk and cream supplied by Mill-King Market and Creamery of McGregor, Texas. Most of their flavors are locally sourced in Austin, except for ingredients like vanilla, cocoa and coconut, because they don’t grow in Austin. They prefer to handcraft flavors based on what’s locally available, though.

The ice cream flavors!
The most exciting thing about Lick Honest Ice Creams is the creative flavors of the ice cream. They have a list of everyday flavors that consists of:

  • Horchata.
  • Texas sheet cake.
  • Pecans and cream.
  • Dark chocolate with olive oil and sea salt.
  • Milk chocolate.
  • Too Hot Chocolate.
  • Caramel Salt Lick.
  • Goat cheese, thyme and honey.
  • Texas au lait.
  • Roasted beets and fresh mint.
  • Hill Country Honey and Vanilla Bean.

There is also a rotating seasonal menu full of eccentric flavors that are currently locally available and in season. The flavors you can taste on their fourth anniversary are:

  • Brown butter brown sugar.
  • Cardamom pear cake.
  • Hazel’s Pumpkin Pie.
  • Sweet potato.
  • Cilantro lime.

But that’s not all! In the spirit of allowing everyone to experience Lick Honest Ice Creams’ artisanal flavors, there is also a dairy-free/vegan menu. Vegans and people with a lactose intolerance are able to savor the flavors of:

  • Vanilla pear.
  • Coconut, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Swirl.
  • Coconut and avocado curd.
  • Tart Toasted Coconut.

The eccentric menu at Lick Honest Ice Creams draws people from all over Texas. Wish them a happy anniversary and set yourself up to never be satisfied with a soft-serve cone again.
