Apple pie is hot, comforting and irresistible. However, if you’re working toward an online cooking school certificate, you may be ready to try your hand at something a little different. Many chefs have developed their own versions of the classic dessert that add fun new spins. Try using a few of these ideas in your own recipes and you may change the way you make apple pie forever.

1. Bring a little summer into your fall flavors
Apple pies make an ideal fall treat, but there’s still some great produce available from the warmer months. Why not add variety to your pie by including raspberries? The version suggested by Country Living involves combining the fruits with flour, raspberry jam, granulated sugar, vanilla and salt to make the filling.

2. Add rosemary and honey to the mix
One simple way to make apple pies new and exciting again is to add unconventional flavors to the filling. Delish offered a recipe that contributes both savory and sweet tastes with rosemary and honey. To prepare this unusual filling, mix Granny Smith and McIntosh apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, rosemary, tapioca and honey.

3. Replace the crust with biscuits
If you’re looking for a spin on pie that’s both adventurous and portable, try the apple pie biscuits created by Joy the Baker. The directions call for Fuji apples combined with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Instead of a traditional pie crust, the fruit goes into buttermilk biscuits. Heat the apples before preparing the biscuit dough. Then fold the filling into the biscuits and bake for 12 to 14 minutes.

4. Combine two favorite desserts
Caramel apples and cheesecake are both treats that bring excitement to any gathering. Brown Eyed Baker presented a recipe that layers these fantastic tastes together. The pie includes Granny Smith apples with sugar and cinnamon, a salted caramel sauce with chopped pecans, plus cheesecake, all held together by a graham cracker crust.

5. Deep fry the pie
Half Baked Harvest came up with an unconventional pie recipe that starts with caramelizing apple slices in cinnamon and brown sugar before adding apple cider vinegar, vanilla and bourbon. Wrap the filling in puff pastry and fry the pies in oil at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 seconds on each side.

There’s nothing wrong with Grandma’s apple pie. On the other hand, by putting your culinary academy skills to work you can craft a unique and memorable dessert that’s still packed with classic taste.
