Life is so fast paced these days that restaurants need wheels. Whether you’re on you way to class at a Texas culinary arts school, on a quick lunch break or just want to chow down on some authentic street food, Austin is chock-full of food trucks. The flexibility in location and hours makes food trucking a favorite among restaurateurs and foodies alike.
Cow Tipping Creamery
Cow Tipping Creamery isn’t your typical ice cream shop. Though you can order a plain cone if you’re afraid to take chances, it offers such a wide array of exciting ingredients like chocolate Dr. Pepper sauce and caramelized bananas to have added to your Stackers or shakes. If you really want to play it safe and order an ice cream cone, at least get it in a pretzel cone. Cow Tipping Creamery is parked at 2512 Rio Grande St.
Ms. P’s Electric Cock
Specializing in farm fresh fried chicken and street tacos made of locally sourced ingredients on a corn or flour tortilla, Ms. P’s Electric cock is a hit. Grab yourself a side of waffles or truffle mac and cheese while you’re there too. Ms. P’s offers breakfast tacos until noon every day and lunch and dinner is sold until all of the farm fresh chicken is gone. The truck is parked at 1101 South Congress Ave.
Red Star Southern
Red Star Southern specializes in comfort food, complete with hush puppies, biscuits and gravy, and fried chicken. For a food truck, Red Star offers a pretty extensive menu, even offering a fancy “chef’s table” tasting menu option by reservation. The truck is currently parked in front of Wonderland at 1104 East 6th St. from 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays until they’re sold out.
Kyoten
So a truck might not be the first place you think to get freshly made sushi, but it should be. At the heart of East 6th, Kyoten is Austin’s only sushi trailer. Offering traditional sushi, rolls and rice bowls, the owners pride themselves in using sustainable and high-quality seafood. Feel free to BYOB and stop by to play with Kyoten’s resident dog, Baku.
Hey!… You Gonna Eat or What?
That’s not a question when you’re at this food truck because you’re obviously going to want to check out their Shiner Monte Cristo or Spicy SXSW Reuben with homemade chips. This sandwich shop on wheels is currently parked at 1720 Barton Springs Road.
